all things thesis

I have begun thinking seriously about my MA thesis. It will be a series of thematic essays, rather than a series of chapters defending a single thesis. I am not sure exactly which papers will be included, but I know the theme will be on reasons and rationality. Moreover, I am almost certain that the main theme will revolve around my theory of maximal rationality outlined in 'On Maximal Rationality.'

Update 4/3/2008: Several important things happened in the last month. First, Mark Schroeder has agreed to supervise an independent study about the normativity of coherence requirements in Fall '08. Barring a serious lack of creativity on my part, this means that the second part of the thesis will be on the coherence requirements of rationality. The other piece of big news is that I turned in my thesis prospectus and it was approved. You can read it here

Update 3/2/2008: Mark van Roojen has agreed to be my committee director. David Sobel will be, at the very least, advising.  Since he will be at St. Andrews/Oxford next year, it is unclear whether he will be on the committee. We will have to do some bureaucratic untangling before we find out.

Moreover, I am currently writing a paper for David's seminar this semester that will make up the first part of the thesis. It is called 'Correctly Responding to Reasons and Internalism About Rationality.' In it, I argue against internalism about rationality in favor of access externalism.

I will post more information here in the coming weeks and months. Stay tuned.
